Swann welcomes Causeway cycle link plan
Mr Robin Swann, the Ulster Unionist Party Assembly member for North Antrim and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, has “warmly welcomed the excellent announcement” that a cycle and pedestrian link is being considered between Bushmills and the Giant’s Causeway. Assemblyman Swann, who also the North Antrim UUP Chairman and Party Chief Whip, revealed the proposed link following a letter he received from his party colleague and Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy MLA. In his letter to Mr Swann, Minister Kennedy wrote: “Further to our meeting of 11 June, 2012, regarding the provision of a cycle/pedestrian link between Bushmills and the Giant’s Causeway, I am pleased to inform you that a proposal to provide a cycle/pedestrian link at this location, which will include a link from The Aird to the Giant’s Causeway Visitor’s Centre, has met the criteria to progress for further more detailed appraisal by Roads Service. … Continue reading
Swann welcomes Runkerry decision
ROBIN SWANN, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assembly member, has “warmly welcomed” the recent decision by the High Court to grant permission for a golf resort at Runkerry on the North Antrim coast as “a tremendous decision for economic common sense and a life-saving boost for the region’s tourist trade”. Assemblyman Swann, who is also North Antrim UUP Chairman and Party Chief Whip, said the High Court decision would now “fire the starting gun on a much-needed development which could bring unprecedented financial gain for the specific Bushmills locality and the wider North Antrim constituency”. Mr Swann added: “The High Court decision is fantastic news for tourism in Northern Ireland and it is especially outstanding news for our local economy in North Antrim. “While we realise the delay since planning permission was first granted over a year ago for the Bushmills Dunes Golf Resort and Spa has been unfortunate, … Continue reading

Swann steps up campaign to save Bushmills Post Office
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Committees for Agriculture and Culture, has called on the entire constituency to rally behind saving Bushmills Post Office from closure. Mr Swann is North Antrim UUP Chairman and Party Chief Whip. He added: “We need to understand that this is not just about the future of a single village Post Office. “There is the real danger that there will be a very serious knock-on effect for rural communities across the constituency if we start losing battles to save individual Post Offices. “The authorities will not want to antagonise the constituency by closing all threatened Post Offices at once. The danger is that the authorities will introduce a campaign of quiet, individual closures. “Before we as a community know what is happening, we will have lost an entire network of rural Post Offices. Such Post Offices … Continue reading

Swann urges action to combat “derelict building blight”
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, has challenged the SDLP Environment Minister Alex Attwood “to implement a realistic planning strategy which will eliminate the scourge of derelict building blight”. Assemblyman Swann is the former chairman of the influential Rural Youth Europe organisation, and is currently North Antrim UUP Chairman and Party Chief Whip. Mr Swann publicly threw down the planning gauntlet to Minister Attwood during Ministerial questions in the Stormont Chamber. The North Antrim UUP man had asked: “Given that there are an increasing number of derelict buildings in villages due to deterioration, do you agree that the planning criteria for townscape character need to be reviewed to allow for a more practical opportunity for demolition and rebuild? “I stressed to the Minister that such a policy would go some way towards the re-enhancement of Ballycastle, … Continue reading
Swann appeals for ‘massive’ Olympic Flame turnout
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman, and member of the Agriculture and Culture Committees, has appealed to all constituents for a “massive and magnificent turnout” to welcome the London Olympic Flame as it comes through the constituency early next month. Assemblyman Swann, who is also North Antrim UUP Chairman, Chief Whip and Party Sports Spokesman, made the call as Olympic organisers emphasised the Northern Ireland route, which included North Antrim on Sunday 3 June, 2012. Mr Swann said: “I am really pleased the organisers have included North Antrim in the London Olympic Torch relay through Northern Ireland. “On Sunday 3 June, 2012, the Flame will come into Ballycastle from Cushendall, and then proceed to Dervock and Bushmills, before heading into Portrush in our neighbouring East Londonderry constituency. “On Thursday 7 June, the Flame will again return to North Antrim when it comes to Ballymena and Moorfields … Continue reading
