Swann calls for ‘just benefit system’
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, has issued a hard-hitting challenge to DUP Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland “to introduce a just system for incapacity benefit”. Assemblyman Swann is the former chairman of the influential Rural Youth Europe organisation, and is currently North Antrim UUP Chairman and Party Chief Whip. Mr Swann publicly threw down his gauntlet to Minister McCausland during a crucial debate on the matter in the Stormont Chamber. The motion for debate read: “That this Assembly expresses concern that the reassessment process for people who are moving from incapacity benefit to employment and support allowance, with no cognisance being taken of their medical records, is resulting in many people being unfairly deemed “fit for work” and losing their benefit. “And it calls on the Minister for Social Development to review urgently the reassessment … Continue reading
Swann urges fairer creative industries spend
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Culture, Arts and Leisure Committee, has called on the Stormont departments to “play fair” when it comes to funding the creative industries in Council areas across North and East Antrim. Assemblyman Swann, who is also North Antrim UUP Chairman and UUP Culture Spokesman, issued his challenge after recent figures revealed that North Antrim’s three councils – Ballymena, Ballymoney and Moyle – along with neighbouring East Antrim’s Carrickfergus Council receive some of the lowest creative industries investment in Northern Ireland. Assemblyman Swann said: “Continually we hear ministers from the Office of First and deputy First Minister, Trade and Investment, and Culture, Arts and Leisure saying creative industries will be the industry which could pull Northern Ireland out of the current economic difficulties it is in. “Unfortunately, their investment in council areas does not match their words. … Continue reading

Swann urges action on rocketing fuel prices
Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Agriculture and Culture Committees, has urged the Stormont Executive to put pressure on fuel providers to lower their prices and prevent a fuel price crisis engulfing the Province. Mr Swann, who is also North Antrim UUP Chairman, said: “The rocketing price rises in home heating oil has witnessed an increase of almost 90 per cent in the past two years. These shocking price rises are being felt more acutely in today’s tough economic times. “As a UUP MLA, I have been constantly lobbying for fair fuel prices. This fuel price crisis has been heightened by the rising price of natural gas by totally ridiculous percentages. “I will highlight the disgraceful rise in the price of natural gas, which could lead to families having to find an average additional £580. “This unacceptable situation could spark another highly … Continue reading
