Swann urges closer ties with China to boost local economy

December 5, 2017

Mr Robin Swann, the Ulster Unionist North Antrim Assemblyman and Party Leader, has said there is “an urgent need for the return of the Stormont Executive so that closer ties can be developed between the constituency and the vast economic markets in China”.

Assemblyman Swann made his appeal after he met delegates from China at a recent summit at Parliament Buildings, Stormont.

Mr Swann said: “As UUP leader and North Antrim MLA, I was very pleased to welcome Chinese provincial and municipal leaders to the Assembly where they were attending the 2017 UK-China Regional Leaders Summit.

“This important and prestigious summit allowed me the great opportunity to promote Northern Ireland’s business, produce and tourism potential, and particularly for our North Antrim constituency.

“China has the potential to be a major market for the Province’s agri-food products. And let’s not forget that North Antrim has a terrific reputation for the quality of its agricultural industries.

“We now have the opportunity to build on the foundations of this recent UK-China summit to create a situation whereby because of links with China, we could see potentially jobs and inward investment come to our constituency.

“As a constituency, we already have an excellent reputation in the global market because of the success of home-grown companies, such as Wright Bus. I fully intend to use the contacts which I have made at the recent summit to help with the rejuvenation of the North Antrim economy, and especially in our farming sector,” said Assemblyman Swann, himself a Past President of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster.
